Concurrent Disorders & Pain Nursing Fellowship

The Concurrent Disorders and Pain Nursing Fellowship is a fully funded specialized training program that takes place over the course of a year. Through a generous contribution from The Brenner Foundation to the Integrated Mental Health, Addiction, and Pain Research Program (IMAPP) this opportunity is available for interested nurses. It is designed for nurses who wish to enhance their knowledge and skills in the management and care of this unique patient population. Fellows will participate in supervised clinical experiences/placements, didactic teaching sessions, and research endeavors, with ongoing mentorship and support to hone their clinical assessment, judgment, and skills, as well as provide opportunities to engage in leadership and research experience.

Learning Activities

Clinical Rotations

Varied clinic rotations/placements across diverse healthcare settings, including both inpatient and outpatient placements.

Teaching & Leadership

Fellows will be encouraged throughout their clinical rotations to develop their teaching, leadership, and presentation skills through providing education to healthcare providers.

Research Meetings

Weekly research meeting attendance.

Journal Club

Participation in monthly journal clubs and the expectation that the fellow will present on one journal article relevant to their current placement.

Conference Attendance

Attendance at a relevant conference either virtually or in person, relevant to the fellowship and applicant’s interests.

Research Presentation

Present research project/capstone project at a conference (if accepted), if not accepted, will present at Research meeting.

Clinical Experience


Fellows will gain hands-on experience in a variety of specialized healthcare settings, including BUT not limited to:

Pain and Addiction Services (Emergency, Psychiatry, ICU, High Acuity and Inpatient Units)

Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry 

Access and Assessment Center

Hope to Health Research & Innovation Centre (H2H), primary care clinic

Foundry Granville Clinic

Red Fish Healing Centre for Mental Health and Addiction

Transitional Pain Clinic

Prerequisites

Completion of the required prerequisite courses before the program start date, with certification available upon request.

Eligibility Criteria


Be a Registered Nurse or Registered Psychiatric Nurse licensed and in good standing with the BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).


Two years of clinical experience


Preference will be given to applicants with prior experience in any of the areas: concurrent disorders, mental health, psychiatry, substance use, and/or pain

While the Fellowship commencement date is the week of January 5, 2026, there may be some flexibility with the start date depending on the applicant’s schedule.

2. Personal Statement (500 words, PDF format) addressing:

Clinical and professional background, including preparation for the Fellowship

Interest in participating in a Concurrent Disorders and Pain Fellowship

Personal and professional learning objectives, as well as how they will advance this area of care through their completion of the Fellowship

Specific interests pertaining to clinical placements, rotations, and research interests/activities
